Zumba?! What The Heck Is That? Some Kind Of Fruit Smoothie? A Workout With Zoo Animals?

Zumba is an aerobics class that uses latin dance music and movement to create a new exciting way to exercise. To paraphrase Alberto Perlman, chief executive of Zumba fitness, it takes the experience of a Saturday night at a nightclub and turns it into a fitness class on Monday night.

So, if you enjoy dancing the night away at a nightclub, then Zumba is right up your alley. Likewise, if you have ever dreamed of dancing the night away but were too shy, it can be a great way for you to overcome your fears because you will be in a class where everyone is doing it. In fact, you would look out of place if you didn’t “shake your thang”. Or if you are looking for something new to spice up your aerobics workout, something more interesting than mindlessly running on a treadmill, Zumba may be the answer.

Right now there are are plenty of instructors and many places that offer Zumba classes. You don’t even have to belong to a gym to have access to a Zumba class although many gyms offer classes. Zumba only requires instructors to participate in an eight hour training course before licensing them to use their specific choreography and music. When it says it is a Zumba class it only means that the movements and the music are the same. There is no regulation about how the teaching is done. The way the instructors teach may be completely different. So don’t be afraid to shop around. It may change your experience with Zumba.

  2. I can’t believe that there are still people out there who have no idea what Zumba is. Plain and simple, if you hate working out, then you NEED to go for a Zumba workout with friends. You can usually get a free session to try it at your local gym.

    • You cannot target weight loss to a specific area, and contrary to misguided posts here crunches and ab exercises DO NOT burn belly fat but they tone the ab muscles.

      Toning those muscles is good, but if you still have fat over them you won’t be able to see them. You need cardio exercise to burn fat from anywhere on your body my preferred cardio workouts are running, bicycling, and various aerobics DVDs including Turbo Jam and the cardio workouts in the P90X program (Cardio X, Kenpo X, and Plyometrics).

      Cardio exercise (to burn fat) combined with a good ab workout routine, should leave you with a nice looking tummy eventually (depends on how much weight you have to lose, and how long it take to tone those abs)
