Share-way to Heaven: Make Life Easy Week

10.19.2009

The Bite:
Short of a private zeppelin, what's one of the easiest ways to get around? Think heavy metal: cars. Try joining a car-share service to relieve the stress that comes with owning a car. [Enter guitar solo here.]
The Benefits:
  • Car-shares have their own designated parking spots - especially handy if you live in a crowded city.
  • You don't have to worry about separate insurance or maintenance, and gas is usually included in the hourly fee.
  • They have lots of different rides - get a convertible if it's a nice day, a truck if you need to haul furniture.
  • People who car-share tend to cut their car use in half - opting for road-rage-free modes of transport when they can, like biking and walking (side effect: less traffic).
Personally Speaking:
The coolest new thing about the one we use in SF, Zipcar? Its brand-new iPhone app that lets you unlock your reserved car using your phone.
Wanna Try:
How it works:
  1. You pay a monthly or yearly membership (around $35-$150), plus an hourly fee for car use (around $10; usually includes gas, insurance, and maintenance).
  2. Reserve a car online or by phone (it's way easy) - pick your location, the car you want, and how long you want it. It'll charge your credit card.
  3. Unlock it with your member key card, drive away, then return it by the time your reservation expires (many let you extend your reservation if you need to and the car's available).

  • Car Sharing - find a car sharing service in your area.

Cocktail Fact

Despite never being released as a single in the United States, people have requested "Stairway to Heaven" more than any other song on American radio.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters ditch their personal cars for car-shares, we'll reduce emissions equal to taking 5,000 cars off the road.

I know the subject is CAR-share, but there is a great program in Missoula, MT that the Missoula Urban Demonstration project (www.mudproject.org) operates - the Truck-Share program. M.U.D. members have access to 2 trucks. Very reasonably priced and easy to check out. Car-share programs require a fairly large metropolitan area for them to work, so to find this in little ole Missoula is a great feat. Nice work MUD!
I used to do a car-share when I lived in Chicago and it was GREAT!!! The one I used is called I-GO and it's wonderfully convenient with cars all over the place. If you're in Chicago, give them a look. I didn't even have a monthly fee, only hourly. They have different plans to fit your needs. :)
I was thinking of implementing my own "car-share" on a neighborhood level with several of my friends who live nearby. We have two cars and one of them tends to sit unused (and insured) 95% of the time. I'm wondering about insurance and whether anyone has had success doing this?
I live in Chicago and don't own a car- so if walking, biking, or public transportation won't do I rent a car from www.igocars.org. They are a green company, and I believe a "not for profit". Extremely convenient and cost effective for me.
