WEED CONTROL

Hostile Takeover - Garden Week

04.07.2009

The Bite:
Weeds showing your plants no mercy? Fight back with eco-friendlier herbicides that keep weeds away while letting your garden re-coup.
The Benefits:
  • Peace on Earth. The majority of the herbicide you apply doesn't actually reach the target weed, and all of it eventually impacts the environment.
  • Less violence toward your plants and the earthworms that sweeten your soil - and our options are still effective.
  • Keeping kids and pets outta harm's way. There are about 110,000 human poisonings from herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides in the United States each year.
Personally Speaking:
Jen even killed knapweed (MT's notoriously insidious nonnative invader) using Deadeye (though she had to do it several times 'cuz that stuff just keeps coming back).
Wanna Try:
  • Deadeye - vinegar-based spray formula ($8/32 ounces).
  • WOW - made from corn gluten, it releases fertilizing nitrogen for your lawn after it's done killing weeds ($9/1 pound).
  • NaturaLawn - let enviro-friendly pros get rid of your weeds.
  • DIY Bite: Pour boiling water or white vinegar on smaller weeds (like the ones in your walkway cracks). For larger areas where you don’t want any growth, lay down old fabric or newspaper.

Cocktail Fact

UK researchers developed a robot that eats and is powered by slugs (using the bio-gas of the decaying slugs), dubbed the SlugBot.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biter households switch to nontoxic pest control, in a year we'll avert the weight of a car in synthetic pesticides.

so glad this product is here for us to use, since many of us are greening up our homes, and landscapes!
Embrace biodiversity! Dandelions are beautiful, and edible. Clover is a great soil builder, which means it adds natural nitrogen. It also controls weeds.
Try over-seeding your lawn to choke the weeds out. More grass means less room for weeds.
After trying benign neglect on the dandelions and losing half my lawn in the process, we now use WOW from Gardens Alive! Apply it once in the spring and once in the fall and it really works. The lawn isn't weed free, but the grass certainly outnumbers anything else and it looks healthy. Lots of birds and bugs in my yard, which is just how I like it. FYI - this is in Iowa where weeds REALLY know how to grow, what with all the rain, heat and summer humidity.
Can't stand slugs. What so I do that really works?
Salt poured in the cracks of the sidewalk and driveway dries up any growth and prevents new growth.
After gardening for 100 years now lol. I use 1 tablespoon green kitchen soap to 1 gallon water and all the hot spices you have . mix well and strain to get out any thing that may plug up sprayer , spray under and over leaves. Does not kill them but it leaves a bad taste in their little mouths . Also if you get human hair ( hairdresser or barber) and spread it around keeps snails and such away. the is protein and breaks down. Oh yes fireplace ash in a 2 inch width spread around keep snail and slug away
I have used boiling water (straight from the teakettle) for years. It works on a huge variety of weeds, including spurge, dandelions, grasses and more. It also works to keep the edges neat...no grass. When my neighbors see me out there with my teakettle....they refer to it as torturing the weeds!
Thanks Dory for posting your comment on biodiversity! Yes....love those dandelions...great tea and makes a great facial cleanser too! Clover is beautiful too...again I say thanks for posting the comment. I highly encourage natural nature! Also I have to admit I do kill my ragweeds and milkweeds (they are uuuuugly & sharp too!) Happy gardening!
Hi! I have a couple of green gardening tips: 1 Part Dr.Bonner's Peppermint soap with a full spray bottle of water. Spray lightly on the leaves, not the blooms will rid your roses of aphids. To rid slugs: There are lots of natural pellets at places like Armstrongs that won't harm any animals, but the old fashioned way is an open can of beer. Planting marigolds close to your veggie plants attracts bugs away from eating your salad. Concentrated hot pepper oil mixed with water (pure and be sure not to touch skin, eyes, etc) will also save your veggies from harm.
