BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Disposable foodware is sometimes unavoidable, but if 10,000 Biters fill their own mugs at the café every day, in a year we'll avert the weight of 1,517 baristas in disposable-cup waste.

COCKTAIL FACT

According to the Global Language Monitor, which keeps track of how often certain words are associated with other words in the media, NYC is the most fashionable city, followed by Rome and Paris.

The Bite

Dandy: This year, switch out your disposable foodware habit for a reusable one to save resources and cash, and you'll be in vogue for 2009.

The Benefits

  • More cash for fashion. Just talkin' paper plates: If you use three per day in your home, you'll easily shell out more than $100 a year (for the sturdier kind).
  • Stylish eco-savings. Each year, Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times if you laid them end-to-end. Plus, dishwashing takes less water than producing new disposable plates.

Personally Speaking

Heather gifted her set of old utensils to the SF office, so we never run out; we've also amassed a ragtag collection of mugs and mason jars.

Start to pay attention to the disposables you use each day, and switch to reusable options (at bars, restaurants, home, wherever):

Cut Out the Middle-pan

I've written about my shall-remain-nameless aunt who uses disposable plates, and just this past week my mom pulled out paper ones for a pizza we ordered - even after I admitted to anyone who would listen that I actually like doing the dishes. If you’re reading this blog, Mom, here’s a friendly reminder!

I also chatted with my roommate about this recently - how to limit my use of disposables. For starters, I no longer take the sleeve for my to-go hot chocolates (when I forget my reusable mug, natch). Then we joked about going in and asking for no cup at all, "Just pour it down our throats," but then there's the whole burning issue. I'm a big fan of picking from the pan too (esp. with mac-‘n'-cheese) - you save a plate and water too.

Biter Comments...
I'm a Tupperware addict and I use it everywhere! In addition to bringing my own to-go mug and water bottle, I also bring Tupperware's collapsible FlatOut containers to restaurants and family gatherings. They fold flat to fit in my bag, but expand so I can take home leftovers. This means I don't use the styrofoam to-go containers at restaurants, and at big family events, I get to take home my grandmother's delicious leftovers without taking a paper plate covered in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. I've got tons of other great Tupperware tips like these, so anyone can email me if they want more.
That's my comment above, with the Tupperware tips. I didn't realize it wouldn't include my email. If you want more tips like these, you can contact me at friday18 at yahoo dot com.
