Eco-Luggage

Case in Point

10.08.2009

The Bite:
Does Your Honor need a new suitcase before holiday travels begin? Case closed: Just transport your stuff in sustainably made luggage. We think they're great, but you be the judge.
The Benefits:
  • While conventional luggage materials - PVC and leather - are undoubtedly durable, so are eco-friendlier hemp, nylon, and vegetable-tanned leather.
  • Not prosecuting your health. Our picks contain less chromium (used to tan conventional leather) and above-mentioned PVC, which lets off potentially cancer-causing chems during and after production.
Personally Speaking:
Not a fan of the yards of unnecessary cellophane dispensed by the shrink-wrappers at airports, Jenifer keeps luggage straps in all her suitcases.
Wanna Try:
  • Vegan Queen Jet Bag - we can't afford it, but this new, luxe non-PVC faux leather bag has an organic cotton lining and lots of great details like antiqued brass hardware. In black and yellow or khaki and purple - click Jet Bag to see ($900).
  • Hartmann Tweed Collection - pricey, but it'll last forever and its Tweed and Belting leather collections use vegetable-tanned hides ($595 and up).
  • Patagonia Freewheeler - sporty recycled polyester wheeled bag ($350).
  • Ecolution Duffel - well made out of hemp and spacious, with plenty of pockets. Also available larger ($80).
  • Traveler's Choice Carry-on Set - two pieces, both made from heavy-duty hemp canvas: a small wheeled case and a tote ($80).
  • If you need to secure an overstuffed bag, try a hardy luggage strap ($10).

Cocktail Fact

Last year, about five bags out of every 1,000 were "mishandled" (aka delayed or lost); we could swear there's some underreporting going on.

Bang For The Bite

Eco-luggage is durable and light on carcinogenic chems. If only some of the price tags weren't so heavy.

You guys missed the greenest luggage- vintage!! There is a lot of amazing vintage stuff out there. Keep your eyes open at your local thrift/antique stores, or check on ebay or craigslist. I just found a leather suitcase at an antique show for only $18, the perfect size for a carry-on...
Right there with Jessica. I would love to see as part of the daily bite some element of a reuse option. For luggage, thrift stores usually have a ton of it, and in those circumstances the biter tip would be things to look/tests to run for when shopping for secondhand stuff.
that was my first thought, too! what about vintage? using and sharing what you've already got is the eco-friendliest way to go. i just did a quick search for vintage luggage on etsy...so much awesomeness! http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_type=vintage&search_query=...
I see that some others commented on how we should use what we already have available. I know that some may have to buy new when they don't find what they need used, and that's what's being promoted here, but I think that Ideal Bite needs to get in touch with the charitable foundations a bit more. I love the "sassier side of green" so keep it as green as possible!
I wanted to share another great product: messenger bags made from old billboards. they are all unique and way cool! (and water resistant too!) check out http://www.revinylize.com
I'm with you. I haven't used my hard case luggage in some time and I never will again. No need. As I get older I find myself looking to simplify my life in as many ways as possible. Go with this light weight easy to use carry on stuff. casino online
