Halloween Candy

Can't Fight City Hall(oween)

The Bite:
Fed up with giving out not-so-healthy candy? Put down the picket sign and hand out the sweetest organic candy around - might even wanna send some to the mayor.
The Benefits:
  • There are healthier options out there with no preservatives or artificial ingredients.
  • We taste-tested 'em, and the kids in us loved them.
  • Even though it's a tiny change, going organic with your Halloween candy supports sustainable agriculture.
Personally Speaking:
On the Biter editorial team, the median age at which we stopped trick-or-treating was 12, but most of us think you should stop before that, unless, as Chicago Bite editor Daisy reasoned, "you wear a creative costume. Show some effort people - candy doesn't grow on trees."
Wanna Try:

Cocktail Fact

In 2007, RI resident Joe Jutras set the world record for the weightiest pumpkin ever grown: 1,689 pounds (no word as to whether it was genetically modified).

Bang For The Bite

These aren't necessarily healthier if you consider the sugar content, but they're comparable in price to conventional candy, use fewer pesticides during production, and taste as good as the usual stuff besides.

Healthy(ish) candy corn?!????
I have a feeling that the same vendor who made those "Halloween" organic lollies is the same one who makes ours. TJ's is oddly having some Halloween themed candy this year. They're gummies. There are little, teeny, tiny candies, too.
Love the idea, but with the number of trick-or-treaters we get, I'd be spending hundreds of dollars. No can do!
Organic or not, candy is very unhealthful. I'd rather see ideas for non-candy items you can hand out, such as apples. Local, seasonal, organic apples - while pricey - would probably end up being cheaper than the candy you listed.
"Comparable in prices to conventional candy??" Where are they buying their regular candy at?
I'm looking at buying candy without Palm Oil. The palm oil crisis is destroying rainforests and all the endemic plant and animal species including orangutans in Indonesia and Malaysia. The Cheynne Mtn Zoo has a great list: http://www.cmzoo.org/docs/palmOilCandyGuide2009.pdf
I'm surprised that you would list gummy bears that contain animal products - that is not Ideal!
Don't want anyone to loose a bet at that cocktail party... Tuesday, October 6, 2009 Largest pumpkin-world record set by Christy Harp JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio, USA -- Christy Harp, a local High School math teacher, has grown a 1,725 pounds pumpkin-which sets the new world record for the Largest pumpkin.
Yikes - $32 for 64 pieces of candy? I agree with another poster- in what time warp are these prices comparable? If you give out a handful, fine, but...
Okay, so the pinwheel candy sounded interesting and I clicked the link only to find the product has been discontinued. Also, as for handing out apples. Most parents are like me and if something is wrapped and sealed at the factory it gets thrown out. You can't tell what sort of nut jobs are out there and the kids health isn't worth the risk.
