Wherefore Art Thou Painting?

11.03.2009

The Bite:
If it's for your kid's next art project, then try eco tempera paints. These vibrant pigments are nontoxic, so they keep kids safe and put a Cap(ulet) on pollution.
The Benefits:
  • Unlike conventional paints, these pigments are made with natural minerals, so when you rinse off thy brushes, synthetic chemical dyes don't end up in waterways.
  • Tempera paints contain no off-gasing VOCs - headache-inducing fumes from petrochems in conventional paints.
  • These paints contain minerals like umber, ochre, and sienna to create a full range of hues, like that which we call rose.
Wanna Try:
  • Rublev Colours - starting kit of mineral-based paints; includes 1-ounce jars of red, yellow, green, umber (brown), black, and white ($17).
  • Clementine Art - creamy tempera paints colored with Mayan mineral earth pigments; set includes 2-ounce jars of red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and black; available at Whole Foods ($12).
  • Sargent Art - thick tempera craft paints in a great range of colors including peach, silver, gold, and turquoise; doubles as finger paint ($5/16-ounce jar).
  • DIY Bite - make your own inexpensive milk paint in whatever colors you choose with powdered milk and tempera paint pigment.

Timeout

In Albertson, NY, Madison Carson, 6, loves using nontoxic temperas to paint pictures, including one that won a local "Go Green" contest.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Mama Biters buy a set of nontoxic art paints instead of the regular kind, we'll keep the weight of seven Romeos in potentially toxic pigments out of production.
