Hunger Hike

11.02.2009

The Bite:
Actually…strike that: You'll eat well when you find out how LA's native plants and flowers can spice up your meals on the Wild Eats Hike and Learn trip. During an easy 1/2-mile hike along the Temescal Canyon Waterfall trail, two flora and fauna specialists will give you a crash course on wild edibles such as California bay, black sage, and lemon berries, and how to use them to make things like homemade jam. Did we mention stellar ocean views, and a beautiful shaded canyon? Nothing to protest here.
Why Care?:
Learning to identify and use wild edibles might inspire you to introduce native plant species into your yard for ongoing use in the kitchen, plus outdoor exercise saves energy over the gym.
Hiking in Temescal Canyon made us feel like we weren't in LA anymore (if only we could have a waterfall in our backyard).
Wanna Try:
Wild Eats Hike and Learn; Nov. 7, 10 am; Temescal Gateway Park, 15601 Sunset Blvd. (on the nonocean side of Sunset), Pacific Palisades. Parking at trailhead, $7; or free within a 1/4-mile (5 minute) walking distance.

Cocktail Fact

Mahatma Gandhi, known for nonviolent protests like hunger strikes, is widely credited with having forced the peaceful end of British rule over India in 1947, the year before his death.

Small Changes Add Up

If 10,000 LA Biters cook with a half pound of locally grown wild edibles instead of nonlocal produce, we'll save enough gas to fill the tanks of 12 Priuses.
