Office

Gimme Some Space

So, my boyfriend just decided to branch out on his own and work from home. Instead of seeing him for a mere 3 hours a day (he works in finance), I can see him all I want now. No more waiting until 10:30 pm to eat dinner, no more walking the dog solo, no more taking care of all the chores alone. Yah!

Staying Home From Work

Ferris Biter's Day Off

Wanna skip out on the office? If you're actually sick, Bueller, do yourself and your coworkers a favor and don't go to work next time you feel under the weather. You'll avoid infecting others and get to ditch any boring meetings.

Recycled Notebooks

If Books Could Kill...

…we'd be long dead. Luckily, Sara Pinto's new line of notebooks aim to please. From the lady who brought you your 2009 Weekly Planner, these next of kin are also made using 100% recycled paper, soy inks, and printed and bound here in SF.
Why Care?:
The average American uses the equivalent of a tree 100 feet high and 18 inches in diameter each year in paper - buying notebooks made out of 100% recycled paper chips away at that.

Jen show you how (and why...) to get off those pesky phone book lists.

Free Energy Audits

Win-Win Situation

Wanna do the planet good and score brownie points with your boss? Outcome looks good: Just sign up for a free energy audit with Win-Win Campaign, a nonprofit that hooks up small businesses in Chinatown, LES, and in January, East Harlem with trained interns to figure out where energy (and cash) are going to waste.
Why Care?:
Replacing a single incandescent bulb with a CFL will keep a half ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere (that's like planting 20 trees) over the life of the bulb.

Total (In)tern On

SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry student Ridhima Nayyar spent the summer training as an energy auditor and Project Manager (thank you very much) in Win-Win's Community Energy Co

Green By Numbers

Last week, Newsweek released its long-hyped green rankings of the 500 largest companies in the United States. I would say it made for a few surprises.

The top five:

1. Hewlett-Packard
2. Dell
3. Johnson & Johnson
4. Intel
5. IBM

Green Roofs

Raise the Roof

Get ready to throw your hands in the air for the USPS: The processing center now rocks a new green roof, the largest in NY.
Why Care?:
The green roof not only cleans the air and prevents runoff, but also it helps cut down on heating and cooling at the USPS's Morgan Center by providing insulation and giving local birds, bees, etc. a place to rest.

TGIT to Replace TGIF?

One of the most rad things about a three-day weekend (you've got one coming up this weekend, FYI, in case you've spaced on looking at a calendar) is that it's followed by a four-day workweek.

REUSED AND DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS

Book 'Em: College Week

Handcuffed to high textbook prices? You could alert the authorities, or you could just rent, go for used, or buy e-textbooks, all of which save both cash and trees. We'll put our hands up for that.
