Broken Ceramics = Garden Accoutrements

My mom does a lot of pottery-making, and for one reason or another, ends up with a lot of broken shards (or pieces that just didn't turn out right). The best use for them? Garden accessories. Here's a pic of a recent addition to my parents' backyard - a mosaic at the base of a veranda post - mostly made using toss-away pieces.

Eco Floral Class

Home on the Arrange

Don't want anyone saying a discouraging word about your Thanksgiving centerpiece? Roam over to Celedon & Celery Floral Workshop and learn, hands-on, how to make naturally beautiful holiday centerpieces with rosemary, cockscomb (velvety spun wool-like flowers), and rose hip.
Why Care?:
Conventional farmers use 10-100 times more pesticides on conventional flowers than organic blooms, so picking organic means no pesticides gracing your table.

Sweet Greens Are Made of This...

And who are we to disagree? If you're looking for something for the kiddies to do, check out NY Botanical Garden's Goodnight, Garden event. Kids'll plant soil-protecting buckwheat and clover, as well as garlic tulips, daffodils, and flowering onions that'll bloom come April.
Why Care?:
Showing kids (not just telling them) how to grow their own food may just lead to a lifetime of less packaging waste, lower carbon emissions (produce sourced from outside NY travels on average 1,494 miles to get to us), and fewer chemical pesticides.

Growing Pains

Wanna Seaver your ties to the fruit-fly-infested produce section at your local corner store? Sit(com) back and let Oakland's Garden Fare help you grow your own, whether you're packing a sunny Mission window or a foggy Sunset backyard.

Why Care?:

Growing your own food cuts out the need for cross-country shipping, which cuts back on oil and pollution. Plus, fresh produce tastes better.

Raise the Roof

Get ready to throw your hands in the air for the USPS: The processing center now rocks a new green roof, the largest in NY.
Why Care?:
The green roof not only cleans the air and prevents runoff, but also it helps cut down on heating and cooling at the USPS's Morgan Center by providing insulation and giving local birds, bees, etc. a place to rest.

I May Be Bitter But My Tomatoes Sure Aren't

Rules are rules. I get that. And in order to win the coveted Golden Hoe, I had to grow edible food by the end of the contest, something I will readily admit I did not do.

And On That Farm, She Had Some Mint…

Michael Pollan's NYT article I mentioned last week did it's magic and got me cooking. Since reading it, I've made burritos with fresh corn (granted, hardly a culinary miracle), artichoke pasta, and cold cucumber soup.

Stars in Your Eyes

Are you a stargazer? Point your telescope at the big Perseids meteor shower (its peak is August 12) - just cut your outdoor light pollution so you can see it clearly.
