Locally Made Soaps
On Your Soap Box
Submitted by bdisylvester on Mon, 11/16/2009 - 12:00am. Wanna spread the word, not germs? Shout out for some Saipua soaps. These buttery soft (thanks to shea butter) sudsers are handmade in Hudson, NY, with olive oil, herbs, and natural extracts (no petroleum or artificial dyes and fragrances here) - and smell good enough to eat. For mornings, try the Coffee Mint Soap with brewed coffee grounds, and peppermint, or the citrusy Red Currant. Why Care?:
Unlike many conventional varieties, Saipua makes its soaps without artificial fragrances that contain cancer-linked phthalates, which are absorbed through your skin and wash into waterways via your shower drain.

Turntable
Submitted by bdisylvester on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 12:00am. Wanna put an eco-spin on your holiday table? Round up Dinner-Ware's cork coasters, trivets, and porcelain napkin rings - all handmade locally in Hudson, NY. The rings come with letters or in mod-like designs including colorful dots and pinwheel-ish flowers. Why Care?:
Napkin rings keep cloth napkins separate and sanitary, so you (and guests) can reuse them a few times before washing. And cork is a sustainable material made from stripping bark off cork oak trees without damaging the trees.

Bite the Big Ones
Submitted by bdisylvester on Thu, 10/15/2009 - 11:00pm. Over the last 3 months we've filled you in on everything from electric cars to swanky vintage stores and even showed you how to make your ownThe Big One:
The One You Loved: A staycation in NYC topped your list. You got healthy outside with kayaking and yoga along the Hudson, then grubbed at Josie's West on the Upper West Side. Runner-up: The much-talked-about elevated park also on the West Side, the High Line. You can now head there every Tuesday at dusk for their new free stargazing with high-powered telescopes.
The One We Loved: We spent our last days of summer gobbling up this raw Pineapple Cucumber Gazpacho, which requires only a blender to make - our fave kitchen appliance. Runner-up: We decked our fingers with recycled gold and silver cocktail rings from October Anniversary…our fave, the conch.
The Best Reason to Get Caught in Rented Shoes: Brooklyn Brewery beer, sloppy joes from Blue Ribbon, and bowling in the LEED-certified Brooklyn Bowl building…'nuff said.

Etsy.com’s my go-to for original, not-too-spendy artwork (my super-arty sister recently put up a couple of her pieces - check ‘em out), but as I’m decorating my new apartment I’ve found that it’s also a great source for flea market-y stuff (with somethinEyebrow:
Winter Garden Prep
Sweet Greens Are Made of This...
Submitted by bdisylvester on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 11:00pm. And who are we to disagree? If you're looking for something for the kiddies to do, check out NY Botanical Garden's Goodnight, Garden event. Kids'll plant soil-protecting buckwheat and clover, as well as garlic tulips, daffodils, and flowering onions that'll bloom come April. Why Care?:
Showing kids (not just telling them) how to grow their own food may just lead to a lifetime of less packaging waste, lower carbon emissions (produce sourced from outside NY travels on average 1,494 miles to get to us), and fewer chemical pesticides.
