Beet Lip Gloss
Dead Beet
Submitted by bdisylvester on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 12:00am.Bummed that you ran outta lip gloss? Step up and make your own. Brooklynite Lydia Clark from PureSpa2 showed us how to do it using beets (yep, beets) and stuff in your cupboards - and none of the unhealthy chems like petrolatum in traditional glosses.
Directions:
1. Remove beet from stem, wash, and chop into 1-inch pieces.
2. Place chopped beet in microwave-safe container and heat on high for 1 minute until it releases juice.
3. Pour beet juice and the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl and mix thoroughly (add sugar by the teaspoon until it reaches your desired thickness).
4. Empty the finished blend into a small jar, preferably a repurposed lip gloss container. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 hours to thicken, then apply as you like. It'll keep for 6-8 months.

Eco-Salon
Where the Awilda Things Are
Submitted by mroemer on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 11:00pm. Dark roots and split ends got you feeling like a beastly creature? Book an appointment at Awilda Salon. In the hip Robertson Boulevard digs, this spalike hair salon offers everything from cuts to highlights to blowouts (and it's pretty affordable for a nice place in BH) with eco-perks.Why Care?:
Skipping parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate means no hormone disruptors, and many standard hair dyes contain ammonia, which when combined with peroxide can damage your tresses (high pH level) and trigger allergic reactions - and eventually wash down the drain and into waterways.
Jack Black Gets a Mammogram and I Get a Mani
Two days, two Emmy events, and one too-short weekend later, I'm trying to write this blog instead of watching red carpet arrival recaps (J-Lo flashbacks with Blake Lively's red hot number, right?)…On My Soapbox
…about eco-soap. I'm pretty sure that wasn't a pun, but it's hard to tell anymore. So I've been trying out different eco-soap varieties lately…some are meh, some I really dig (Whole Foods' Rosemary Mint Glycerin Soap), but outside of the glycerin varieties, I seem to run into the same problem with these bars: They almost always fall apart long before their time.

Eco-Gym
No Sweat
Submitted by bdisylvester on Sun, 09/20/2009 - 11:00pm. Does it take serious effort to get yourself to the gym? Not a problem if you've got the right gym: Try Equinox's 17th Street workout haven in Chelsea. Why Care?:
Gyms use a ton of energy (treadmills and lights) and water (showers and towel washing), so a gym with power- and water-saving initiatives shrinks both environmental waste and your waistline in one sweaty swoop.
