Locally Made Cider
Breathe a Cider of Relief
Submitted by bdisylvester on Fri, 11/20/2009 - 12:00am. Worried about what to serve pals who don't drink much wine or beer? Relax and stock up on Doc's Hard Cider. It's made locally in Warwick, NY, and comes in three flavors. There's traditional apple with a strong apple taste and a dry finish; pear with a lighter taste of Bartletts blended with apples; and refreshing raspberry added to apple cider and refermented to get that fizzy champagne effect. Why Care?:
Drinking cider made within a few miles = fewer heavy bottles shipped long distances, which cuts back on fuel and CO2 emissions.

Organic Caterer
Secret Service
Submitted by bdisylvester on Mon, 11/09/2009 - 12:00am. No time to cook 'cuz you're as busy as the president? Get eco-caterer Jacqueline Lombard to cover you. She'll whip up organic, locally sourced food (as in herbs and produce right from her Brooklyn garden) for your next holiday shindig. Why Care?:
Ingesting carcinogenic pesticides is one "gift" we don't want this holiday; going organic keeps them off our plate.

Submitted by dsimmons on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 12:00am. Wanna recruit a better beer? Dodge the ordinary draft and arm yourself with a pint o' Half Acre's latest brew, Magnus. Sample the dark, chocolaty malt and five other staple brews, including a bitter, brown Over Ale and a light Daisy Cutter pale ale (which we like to lap up at Naha) during HA's new Friday beer tastings. Why Care?:

Tea Bar
Mr. Tea
Submitted by mroemer on Thu, 10/29/2009 - 11:00pm. We pity the fool who doesn't try T Salon. This new, comfy, Zen-like sustainable tea bar, café, and market's got every type of tea from black to red, plus wellness and blooming varieties, and many organic options like the clean, antioxidant-packed Organic Green Lung Ching. Why Care?:
Tea from outside the United States may still contain toxic baddies like the pesticide DDT. And while you can wash away pesticides on your nonorganic veggies, you can't wash 'em off your tea, so go for 'cide-free varieties.

Organic Sparkling Wine
Bubble, Bubble, Toil, and Trouble
Submitted by hsnavely on Tue, 10/27/2009 - 11:27pm. Want some wicked bubbly? Guerneville's Korbel is conjuring up its first sparkling wine made with 100% organic grapes this month. Why Care?:
Grapes grown according to USDA organic certification requirements don't use synthetic pesticides (more than 80% of the most common pesticides are potentially carcinogenic), herbicides, or fertilizers.
Beer Itself
There is one other thing we have to fear: a beer and wine tasting event where most vendors are pouring you full glasses of wine and beer while also being pretty lax about taking your drink tickets. Yikes.Eyebrow:
Make It: Reusable Coffee Cozy
Mug Shot
Submitted by bdisylvester on Thu, 10/08/2009 - 11:00pm. Get caught red-handed without your reusable coffee mug? Avoid getting burned with a pair of cuffs - Jen Kuebrich's Go Green Coffee Cozie made from old sweater cuffs, that is. Unlike disposable paper sleeves, these're reusable (just keep one in your bag), helping reduce the 6-10 pounds of paper waste per person per year from disposables.
Go Green Coffee Cozie

What You Need:
Directions:
1. Lay your sweater flat and measure the cuffs horizontally - they should measure at least 3.5-4 inches.
2. Cut off the cuffs on the noncuff side of the seam so it doesn't unravel.
3. If you want, sass them up with a few buttons using these step-by-step instructions.
4. If you're on a roll and feeling ambitious, you can use the rest of the sweater to make a matching scarf - just in time for those chilly days.
