10 Important Herbs For Your Container Garden

herbs-for-your-gardenIf you’re feeling the urge to have a garden but don’t have the time or energy to go outside and work the land growing herbs indoors or on the patio in containers may be the next best thing.

Starting an herb container garden is a great investment as they can be used throughout the year for both culinary means and in dealing with health issues. Also, growing them in containers makes it a low maintenance activity because they won’t spread too far and there will be few weeds to deal with.

That said the following are ten important herbs worth cultivating this summer and highlights of why each will be a beneficial addition to your home.

1. Mint: When it comes to nausea or a stuffy nose mint works wonders. Having fresh leaves on hand throughout the year in order to make tea will bring instant relief without a need to run out and buy other products. Just keep in mind that even though it’s in a container if it flowers and seeds the mint plant will spread quickly so keep it at a distance from the rest of the yard.

2. Thyme: Well-known for it’s use in soups and stews making tea from thyme leaves goes a long way towards alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression. Also, when the cooler weather moves in and winter colds start spreading, thyme tea will help you breathe and think more clearly.

3. Rosemary: If there’s any herb you’d want to let loose in the yard this is the one as it can turn a boring border into a stunning evergreen infused setting. Nevertheless, even though it will be in a container you’ll still be able to reap its many benefits such as lending flavor to many foods like fish and breads. It’s essential oils are also known to be a natural form of pest control since mosquitoes dislike it’s aroma.

4. Basil: In comparison to other herbs basil has an almost sweet, flavorful scent that awakens the mind. A powerful antioxidant like thyme, it’s useful for taking stress down a notch and as an anti-inflammatory which helps ease the bowels.

5. Parsley: Rich in folic acid and iron parsley helps treat high blood pressure and eases cramps during the menstrual cycle. It has so many important uses just having a snippet each day can make a world of a difference.

6. Dill: Dill eases digestion making it ideal for diarrheic issues. Among other things it aids bone growth by being an excellent source of plant-based calcium.

7. Sage: When you have a cold or sore throat sage tea can be a source of relief but should be used sparingly. It’s particularly useful in aiding skin ailments such as athlete’s foot and other irritations. Like rosemary sage also acts as a useful bug repellent.

8. Lemongrass: This herb limits bacterial infection in the body, flushes out toxins, and calms tension and anxiety. It’s commonly found in many tea blends.

9. Cilantro: Looking almost like parsley cilantro helps lower blood sugar, aides hormonal mood swings, reduces bad cholesterol, and is a good source for plant-based dietary fiber.

10. Lavender: Last but not least, lavender’s aroma can relieve tension. It’s leaves are mainly utilized for external use on the body. For instance, fresh lavender can be used as an antiseptic for cuts or sores and rubbing it’s leaves on the temples can help with headaches.

NOTE:
While herbs are natural forms of healing it’s important to use them sparingly at first to ensure there is no allergic reaction. Also, if you have a particular medical condition it may be necessary to consult a doctor or specialist before using herbs regularly.
